Shane Kelly
Shane burst onto the scene at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games where he claimed the silver medal in the Kilometre Time Trial.
Since then he has become Australia 's most prolific medal winner on the track including four World Championship gold medals and bronze medals at both the Sydney and Athens Olympic Games. He secured back-to back Commonwealth games ‘kilo' gold in 1994 and 1998 and in Melbourne last year added a bronze in the Teams Sprint to his collection.
He doesn't do the ‘kilo' anymore but instead has become one of the best keirin riders in the world.
He would prefer we all forget his appearance at the Atlanta Olympic Games but it has become renowned as an example of what ‘true sportsmanship' is all about. Shane was the World Champion and World Record Holder and had one chance on the start line. The clock counted down, the gate opened and he surged forward but in the process he pulled his shoe from the pedal and his dream of Olympic Gold was shattered.
There were no tantrums, no blaming others, no histrionics. He was devastated - but was one of the first to congratulate the eventual winner. The country lad from Ararat is respected by his team mates and idolised by sports fans around the world.
